DIY: Chalkboard Art

Today I’m sharing my first DIY post!  It’s not perfect, but I hope it inspires you to try a new craft project (you know, if you’re into that sort of thing).  I’m often hesitant to jump on trend bandwagons, because I know that they eventually become what looks dated and tacky.  I still hate most styles from the 80s and 90s, because they look so tacky to me!

So, my point: chalkboards are pretty trendy right now.  They’ve been trendy for a few years now I suppose, and I’ve used them in my home in some ways already.  This year though, I decided to try something a little new!  I wanted to try making some art that looks like it’s a chalkboard, but that’s slightly more permanent.  So I came up with the idea of using a black poster board (which is so cheap by the way) and white paint to create my “chalkboard” look.  I’ve included the steps I took here for you, just in case you’d like to try it for yourself!

First, I sketched out a few ideas on my sketchpad so I could make a decision on what I wanted.

First, I cut the poster board to the size I wanted it to be.  Then I sketched my design in pencil on the poster board.  I painted over my pencil sketches, then I was finished!

Before I hung up the painting, I swiped a piece of chalk over the whole thing to give it more of a distressed look.  I know it’s not perfect, but I think it’s a great addition to our mantle!

If you’re not too steady with a paintbrush, or if you want more defined lines, a white paint pen would be a great substitution for the acrylic paint here.

I hope you enjoyed my first DIY!  Remember, you can always comment with questions or concerns by emailing me at
